Developing new treatments for seasonal and pandemic influenza

Our Mission:

Seasonal influenza infections as well as the emergence of life-threatening strains of influenza are a major worldwide health concern. Influenza is a respiratory viral disease that each year affects 10%-20% of the population, creating an immense potential market. Infectious outbreaks with influenza virus are associated with high disease-related mortality and significant socio-economic impact. In the United States alone, annual epidemics cause approximately 300,000 hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths. In addition, three influenza pandemics (1918, 1957 and 1968) during the 20th century have taken an enormous toll of millions of lives and cost billions of dollars. The emergence of the H5N1 avian influenza virus in the late 1990s, and the more recent pandemic H1N1 outbreak in 2009, serve as stark reminders of the threat that influenza posses. Available prophylactic vaccines are not completely effective against emerging strains and the currently available anti-influenza drugs have experienced limited efficacy.

Due to the lack of available antiviral treatments, Influmedix is focusing on new therapeutic targets for influenza, and utilizes structure-based drug design approaches to develop novel influenza inhibitors. Our mission is to develop new treatments for the control of seasonal influenza epidemics as well as pandemic influenza.
